Matanzas Lake is an offshoot of the Illinois River. When the river level is high due to heavy rain or snow in Chicago, the river overflows into the lake. This painting is a view from my cabin in early spring when the winter snows had melted, the Illinois river was at flood stage, and water flowed over ‘the cut’ into Matanzas Lake.
